Intelligent Power Module (IPM) for BLDC, PMSM, and AC Induction Motors 

Introduction

This easy-to-use Intelligent Power Module (IPM) is designed for developing high-performance motor drive applications. The project is based on the STK544UC63K-E, a fully integrated inverter power stage that combines a high-voltage gate driver, six IGBTs, and an onboard thermistor into a compact module. 

The module is suitable for driving Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM), Brushless DC (BLDC) motors, and three-phase AC induction motors. The six IGBTs are internally configured as a three-phase inverter bridge, with separate emitter connections for the lower-side IGBTs, providing maximum flexibility in implementing various motor control algorithms. On this development board, all emitter connections are tied to GND, simplifying circuit design for most applications. 

The STK544UC63K-E incorporates a comprehensive set of protection features to ensure reliable and safe operation. These include: 

• Cross-conduction (shoot-through) protection  
• Under-voltage lockout (UVLO)  
• External shutdown input  
• Integrated thermistor for temperature monitoring  

The development board exposes all essential control and power connections through clearly labelled headers and screw terminals, making it easy to interface with popular microcontrollers and motor control platforms. Its compact design and integrated protection features make it an excellent solution for rapid prototyping, evaluation, and industrial motor control applications.
