Introduction

Piezoelectric sounder driver with built-in boost converter, capable of driving a piezo sounder with up to 24V peak to peak output. PAM8906 chip from diode incorp does everything. With integrated boost converter, the PAM8906 can provide an optimized solution with higher Sound Pressure Level (SPL) for louder output sound, and lower quiescent current along with auto turn-on/off feature for extended battery runtime. PAM8906 provides clear benefits for battery-operated piezoelectric sounder or alarm related applications.  Header connector provided to power input, piezo connections and trigger input, triger pin required TTL signal input.

Top side

With the integrated boost converter and unique piezo sounder driver technology, PAM8906 provides small inrush current, low EMI and yet delivers high system efficiency. The integrated boost converter switches at a fixed frequency of 1.8MHz and as a result, it can operate with a small 0.47µH inductor.

The board configured to operate in self-excitation mode for various piezo sounder applications. It also features thermal shutdown protection, over-current protection, over-voltage protection and under-voltage-lockout protection to ensure safe system operation. Board supports 3 pin piezo sounder.

What Is a Piezo Buzzer?

A piezo buzzer is a small electronic component used to produce sound in electronic devices. It works using the piezoelectric effect, where a piezoelectric material changes shape slightly when an electrical voltage is applied. This movement causes a small metal diaphragm to vibrate, producing an audible tone.

PIEZO internal diagram

Piezo buzzers are commonly used for alarms, warning signals, notifications, timers, and status indicators. They require very little power and can be easily controlled by a microcontroller such as an Arduino or ESP32. Depending on the type, a buzzer can produce a fixed tone or different sounds when driven with different frequencies.
